Chesapeake City, located in Cecil County, Maryland, was originally part of a 17th‑century land grant known as Bohemia Manor, established by Bohemian cartographer Augustine Herman in 1660. The town developed rapidly after the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal opened in 1829, linking the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River. The canal transformed the settlement—then renamed Chesapeake City in 1839—into a bustling hub for maritime trade, shipbuilding, and commerce. Incorporated in 1850, the town’s growth mirrored the canal’s importance as one of the nation’s busiest waterways.
Canal and Bridge Legacy
The canal divides Chesapeake City into north and south sections, connected today by the Chesapeake City Bridge, a high‑level steel arch completed in 1949. The original drawbridge was destroyed in 1942 when struck by a freighter, marking a turning point in the town’s history.
